Only a piece of land, comprising a total of 3.4 Million acres, and distributed amongst the four provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Toledo, offers the unique qualities for the production of fine Manchego cheese.
Perhaps you know it already but as many other European finest products, Manchego cheese belongs to the exclusive club of the Protected Designation of Origin gourmet foods – that’s PDO in admin jargon.
This legal frame – very well known in Europe but not that much in the States – was created by the EU to protect the reputation of quality regional foods, promote rural development and support agricultural activity.
So, you see? You can take Manchego cheese out of its land, but you can’t take the land out of Manchego cheese!
